Burke & Hare approaches the infamous pair as though they operated a grim Victorian startup — entrepreneurial, efficient, catastrophically unethical. Nobody was safe from their late night resurrections. There was money to be made from dead bodies and Burke & Hare were not letting the grass grow under their feet. Unfortunately the supply of fresh cadavers wasn't as quick as the pair wanted so they turned to murder - at least 16 people in total. They even got their preferred method of murder, essentially suffocation, trademarked as 'Burking'. Not a literal trademark obviously, but close enough for the time.
Only Burke got hanged upon discovery of their grisly business as Hare testified against Burke in exchange for immunity.
Toby rebuilds the language of promotion around them with unsettling sincerity, exposing how easily commerce and society sanitises brutality once enough time has passed.
